Illini Swing Society Dance Etiquette & Safety

Dance Etiquette

Respect Everyone: All dancers, instructors, and students must respect the club's rules and each other's decisions, ideology, culture, race, gender, sexual orientation, time, equipment, personal property, and personal space. Speak with respect.

Invitations to Dance: We encourage you to invite others to dance! However, no one is obligated to accept. If someone declines your invitation, please accept their response graciously and move on.

Clarify Roles: Specify what role(s) you’d like to dance with each partner. Roles are independent of gender and sexual orientation.

No Unsolicited Feedback: Please refrain from giving feedback on the dance floor unless your partner is causing you injury. In such cases, speak up immediately.

Be Aware: If you bump into someone on the dance floor, acknowledge it and confirm they are okay.

Personal Hygiene: We realize that this is a sweaty dance and some things can not be helped! Please do your best to be clean around others. This includes:

- Wearing deodorant

- NOT using strongly scented perfumes/colognes

- Changing out of multiple shirts throughout the night

- Using a towel to wipe off sweat

- Using breath mints

Focus on Dancing: Remember, we are here to DANCE! This is not a dating app.

Safety

It is important to us that everyone feels safe. If you ever feel uncomfortable, unsafe, or have any issues you'd like to bring to an organizer's attention, please contact our safer spaces chair Chris Parks or any of our other board members. You can reach out in person, online or fill out our online form to remain anonymous. We will privately discuss the matter with you before taking any action.

Identifying Safer Spaces Volunteers

Look for our Volunteers: Safer Spaces Volunteers will be wearing yellow buttons. Feel free to approach them for support or to report any concerns.

Your Safety and Comfort Matter!

Let’s create a positive and enjoyable dance environment for everyone.

Thank you for being a part of our community!
